Dermatology & Sensitive Aging Skin

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting Essex Dermatology, where, as always, I received exceptional advice and treatment for my aging, fair skin and complexion. During the visit, I learned that when we hit 50, our skin's production of hyaluronic acid and collagen starts to decrease. As a fair-skinned redhead of European descent, this process began for me earlier than for others due to my genetics.

In my efforts to stay ahead of the aging process, I’ve tried countless skincare products, hoping to combat the visible effects of skin aging. However, after many trials (and many errors), I’ve spent a lot on mainstream products filled with synthetic chemicals and aggressive solvents. While some people can use these products regularly, even just a few drops often leave me with headaches, sinus pressure, swelling, bloodshot eyes, sneezing, a runny nose, contact dermatitis, and red irritated spots. I’m not looking for a perfect miracle—just a product that actually works without the unpleasant side effects.

Living in Arizona for the last 8 years and traveling to Europe to study Ayurveda, I also became a Certified Medicinal Aromatherapist. This journey of studying plants, herbs, and therapeutic-grade oils from both West Coast and European perspectives has been a game-changer for me. The results speak for themselves, and best of all—no side effects!

While some might be concerned about the potential for allergic reactions to herbs and essential oils, I’ve learned that the key is using high-quality, pure oils. If you’re vigilant and avoid adulterated products, the benefits are incredible. For me, essential oils have been the solution I’ve been searching for all along.

So now, after years of sun exposure and studying European and Ayurvedic treatments, I’m back in Connecticut bringing this knowledge and experience with me. I’m not “anti” modern medicine—I still visit doctors, take medications when necessary, and follow protocols. But I also know my body and its responses, which is why I take an active role in my own health care. No one knows me better than I do.

Yesterday's visit to Essex Dermatology has me so grateful for their approach to balancing the needs of my skin, which has been affected by both genetics and environmental damage. After spending a lot of time on the golf course, I’ve had a persistent spot on my skin that keeps surfacing. So, the dermatologist applied liquid nitrogen to treat it. Now, here’s where things get tricky: this morning, the treated area is blistered, and it’s crucial that I take steps to prevent scarring. The samples provided by contain products I’ve struggled with in the past, so I needed something soothing and gentle.

Ancient Remedies backed by Current Science

There’s a wealth of scientific research validating the benefits of Lavender Essential oil, specifically Lavandula angustifolia for skin healing after procedures like cryotherapy. This strain is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and calming properties, making it perfect for sensitive or irritated skin. From my experience and studies, I now know which oils to choose. The specific strain I choose is rich in linalool and linalyl acetate (anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds), and does not contain camphor like other strains of lavender. Having applied it sparingly—just a thin layer once a day the redness, inflammation and stinging subsided. It wil take several days but the soothing healing begins!

ADVICE:

  1. Don’t wait until after a procedure to introduce therapeutic-grade oils It is best to start using them ahead of time so you’re familiar with how they affect your skin before you need them for recovery.

  2. NEVER use low-grade, adulterated oils.Make sure the oils are pure and therapeutic-grade. Look for terms like “100% pure” to ensure the quality.

  3. Recommended non-MLM brands that are TESTED & TRUSTED:

As a Certified Aromatherapist and Teacher offering both beginner and advanced certification courses, I source my oils from Wisdom of the Earth. I gladly carry their line of over 200+ oils in my essential oil bar here in Connecticut without the MLM hassle. They focus on providing pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils free from synthetic additives, and their distillation methods emphasize sustainability and ethical sourcing. They work with small, artisanal distillers, resulting in highly potent oils, which makes them ideal for therapeutic use.
